Two great faces fill the canvas — one warm, earth-toned, eyes closed, flowing with the reds and ochres of Papatūānuku; the other cool and luminous, bathed in deep blue, the face of Ranginui. They are turned toward each other, almost touching, their tā moko interweaving at the meeting point between them. Two faces still yearning for each other across the separation.
In Māori cosmology, Ranginui and Papatūānuku — the sky father and earth mother — were separated so that light could enter the world. Theresa renders that separation as tenderness rather than loss.
