The idea for Mōhio was sparked by a kōrero with my 14-year-old son on the drive home from his first year at Te Aute College. (In fact my son named the game, and came up with "tāhae" option - which you will learn about in the game!)
As a whānau, we’ve always loved board games, but we didn't know of any that celebrated our own culture and history in its own right, not a subsection of others.
It sparked a desire to create a game where our whānau could see themselves reflected in every question, where the vastness of Te Ao Māori was celebrated with pride. It was important to me that the game moved beyond a te reo focus —which can sometimes inadvertently create barriers—to focus on our shared history and culture in a way that is accessible to everyone. Mōhio is an invitation to explore the depth of Te Ao Māori, designed for every learner and every whānau, regardless of where they are on their reo journey.
While I work toward bringing the physical Mōhio board game to life, I have developed this digital collection as a way for whānau, schools, and community groups to start the journey now. Every purchase in this collection directly funds the manufacture of the first edition of the board game, moving us one step closer to getting Mōhio onto kitchen tables and into marae & kura across Aotearoa.
This isn’t just randomized trivia. Mōhio is designed with purpose, offering three levels of difficulty—Kākano (Beginner), Tipu (Intermediate), and Puanga (Expert)—ensuring that everyone, from our tamariki to our kaumātua, can play and learn together. Across five pillars including Hākinakina (Sports), Hītori (History), Te Ao Tūroa (Nature), Te Reo & Tikanga (Language & Customs), and Toi & Ahurea (Arts & Culture), you can dive deep into specific topics to test your knowledge and learn along the way!
For starters, we are releasing some free teaser sessions & classroom bundles (played on Kahoot) and a full 100-question "Event in a Box" - ideal for fundraisers or whānau events. Every purchase of our digital options will help us fund the manufacture of the physical board game, and get us closer to bringing this kaupapa to life. We appreciate your support.
